History
Ferdinand I commissioned the residence as a summer retreat high in the Rila range. In 1913, the palace hosted a significant diplomatic moment: Ferdinand I signed a treaty among Balkan nations in preparation for the impending Balkan Wars—a pivotal agreement forged in this mountain setting.
After Bulgaria’s monarchy fell and the communist regime took power, Sitnyakovo was repurposed as a meeting house for the Writer’s Union. Following the end of communist rule in the 1990s, the residence was restored to Tsar Simeon II, the last reigning Bulgarian monarch.
