History
Prince Eugen (1865–1947) was a Swedish prince, trained painter and passionate art collector. Over his lifetime he assembled one of Sweden’s most significant private collections, reflecting his deep engagement with contemporary Swedish art. Upon his death in 1947, he left the estate and its contents to Sweden, establishing a public museum that opened the following year.
What you see
The Mansion, completed in 1905, forms the heart of the complex and was designed by architect Ferdinand Boberg. Boberg also designed the Gallery Building, added eight years later in 1913, to accommodate the expanding collection. The estate preserves an earlier structure—an original manor house dating to the 1780s, known as the Old House—as well as a historic linseed oil mill, layering centuries of architectural history across the grounds.
