Theater Lübeck

One of Schleswig-Holstein’s largest theaters, Theater Lübeck carries three centuries of operatic and dramatic tradition, from the city’s early Enlightenment salons to its present role as a major cultural institution.

At a glance

Theater Lübeck is a state-owned theater managed by Theater Lübeck GmbH on behalf of the city. It ranks among the largest theaters in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein and serves as a venue for opera, drama, and orchestral works.

History

Opera and theatrical work took root in Lübeck during the early Enlightenment. The first opera production in the city premiered on 2 June 1746 in the house of master craftsman Schröder Ecke on the Königstraße. The predecessor of the current building dates from 1752, establishing a continuous performance tradition. The transition of theatrical management to municipal control in the nineteenth century figures in Thomas Mann’s novel Buddenbrooks, which drew on the author’s Lübeck heritage.
