Lourinhã Museum

The Lourinhã Museum is a natural history and palaeontology museum located in Lourinhã, a coastal town in the Oeste region of Portugal, roughly 70 kilometres north of Lisbon. The museum is internationally recognised for its exceptional collection of Late Jurassic dinosaur fossils — including embryos, eggs, bones, and skin impressions — excavated from the fossil-rich Lourinhã Formation, one of the most significant dinosaur fossil sites in Europe.

Overview

The Lourinhã Museum is the primary custodian of palaeontological finds from the Lourinhã Formation, a geological unit that has yielded sauropod, theropod, and stegosaurid remains comparable in age and significance to those of the Morrison Formation in North America. The region around Lourinhã has been nicknamed “the land of dinosaurs” and draws scientists and fossil enthusiasts from around the world. The museum’s collections are actively growing through ongoing excavation campaigns along the Óbidos Lagoon coastline.

History

Systematic fossil collection in the Lourinhã area began in earnest in the 1990s, though isolated finds had been reported by local fishermen and farmers for decades beforehand. International scientific attention increased dramatically after the 1994 discovery of dinosaur embryos with preserved skin — among the oldest sauropod embryos ever found — which were described in the journal Nature. The Lourinhã Museum was formally developed to house and interpret an expanding collection, and it has collaborated with institutions in Portugal, the United States, and Germany on joint research programmes.

What you see

The museum’s main galleries display articulated and reconstructed skeletons of dinosaurs endemic to the Lourinhã Formation, including Lourinhanosaurus antunesi, Dinheirosaurus lourinhanensis, and several theropod species. Fossil eggs and embryos are displayed in climate-controlled cases, accompanied by detailed interpretive panels explaining the discovery context and significance. Hands-on sections allow younger visitors to handle replica casts, and a dedicated research area visible from the gallery floor shows museum staff at work on active specimens.

Cultural significance

The Lourinhã Formation is one of Europe’s foremost Late Jurassic fossil sites, and the museum has positioned Lourinhã as a centre of palaeontological tourism in Portugal. Several dinosaur species carry the town’s name in their scientific designation, cementing its identity as a place of genuine global scientific heritage rather than merely a regional curiosity.
