Great Bend Station
A Mission Revival depot that once served as a crucial junction on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway’s transcontinental main line between Chicago and Los Angeles.

Great Bend station was an important transfer point along the Santa Fe’s northern branch mainline, where it also connected to a secondary route toward Garden City. The station witnessed significant changes in passenger service throughout the mid-twentieth century, serving various named trains and local connections before closure in 1965.
History
The station operated as part of the Santa Fe’s strategic network connecting Chicago to Los Angeles. By 1953, three passenger services ran through Great Bend: the daily California Limited, a Newton–Dodge City local, and a mixed train to Scott City. Rerouting of the California Limited in January 1954 initiated a cascade of service changes. The Grand Canyon replaced it initially, then departed in September 1955. The Santa Fe responded with trains 311/312, a Dodge City–Great Bend–Newton round trip that connected with the Chicagoan and Kansas Cityan at Newton. The Scott City mixed train ceased passenger service on April 19, 1961; trains 311/312 followed on June 13, 1965, marking the end of passenger operations.
What you see
The depot exemplifies Mission Revival architecture, a hallmark of Santa Fe and Southern Pacific stations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Built of buff brick, the station features broad eaves, arched windows, and a stylized Santa Fe emblem. Its open-air waiting room remains a distinctive feature. The building survives today.
