History
The estate originated as part of an extensive nutmeg plantation on Mount Sophia during the nineteenth century. In 1867, the British colonial administration acquired the land and commissioned a mansion to serve as the official residence of the British governor. This arrangement persisted for nearly a century until Singapore achieved self-governance in 1959. The governor’s position was then replaced by the Yang di-Pertuan Negara, subsequently superseded by the President of Singapore.
