Vietnam’s second-largest art museum occupies three colonial buildings to display an extensive collection of Vietnamese painting, sculpture, ceramics, and archaeological treasures spanning centuries.

At a glance

Three interconnected three-floor buildings house one of Vietnam’s premier collections of fine arts. The museum presents Vietnamese creativity across multiple mediums and periods, from ancient Champa relics to contemporary work, making it essential for understanding the nation’s artistic heritage.

History

The main building was constructed between 1929 and 1934 by French architect Rivera as a private villa for the Hua family (Huỳnh Văn Hoà). The structure was repurposed as a museum in 1987, transforming an elegant colonial residence into a public institution devoted to Vietnamese art.

What you see

The French colonial main building retains period features characteristic of 1930s luxury architecture. Inside, three interconnected structures organize collections across nine floors total. The museum displays Vietnamese oil paintings, silk paintings, lacquer work, and traditional woodcut styles including Hàng Trống, Đông Hồ, and Kim Hoàng examples. Ceramics and Buddhist sculptures occupy dedicated galleries. The first floor houses a commercial gallery of contemporary work. Archaeological exhibits—among Vietnam’s finest Champa and Óc Eo artifacts—occupy the third floor.

Cultural significance

The museum ranks second only to Hanoi’s Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts in national importance. It serves as the principal repository of Ho Chi Minh City’s artistic identity, preserving both high art and folk traditions. The Champa and Óc Eo collections provide crucial evidence of pre-Vietnamese civilizations that flourished in the region.
