History
The French colonists established Hỏa Lò Prison in Hanoi to hold political prisoners during their rule in Indochina. Following French withdrawal, North Vietnam used the facility to detain American prisoners of war during the Vietnam War, a period American POWs remembered bitterly as the “Hanoi Hilton.” After Operation Homecoming and the war’s end, the prison became a site for incarcerating Vietnamese dissidents. Between 1993 and 1994, the main structures were demolished, though the gatehouse was preserved.
