History
King Chulalongkorn ordered construction of this building in 1898, initially leasing it as a commercial property. It first housed John Sampson & Son’s department store, a branch of the London-based purveyor of bespoke shoes and saddlery. After the company’s dissolution, Luang Maitriwanich (Chalerm Yotmani) leased the building for the “Suthadilok Department Store” until 1933, when the Department of Public Works assumed control.
In 2001, King Prajadhipok’s Institute transferred museum operations to the site. Renovation work completed in late November 2002 transformed the historic structure into its current institutional role.

The three-storey building retains its early 20th-century character while serving contemporary curatorial purposes. Its layout accommodates permanent exhibition galleries across multiple levels.
