A regional museum housed within Fiľakovo castle, preserving artifacts from centuries of Ottoman occupation and archaeological discoveries.
At a glance
The Fiľakovo Castle Museum showcases objects and archaeological materials documenting the Turkish occupation period of this Slovak fortress town. The collection reflects both the castle’s strategic importance and the region’s layered history.
History
The impulse to preserve Fiľakovo’s heritage began in 1941, when Franciscan priest K. König initiated archaeological excavations and early curatorial efforts. Systematic excavation commenced in 1944 but was suspended during World War II.
The first formal museum opened in 1951 as the District Museum of Local History. By 1960 it was renamed the City Museum. In 1967, the institution merged with a district museum serving Lučenec and eventually adopted the name Novohradské múzeum in Fiľakovo, under which it continues to operate.
What you see
The museum occupies rooms within Fiľakovo castle itself. Artifacts and archaeological finds relating to the Ottoman period form the primary exhibition focus.
Cultural significance
The collection documents a crucial chapter in Slovak history: the long Ottoman occupation of the region. The museum’s archaeological sites contribute to scholarly understanding of medieval and early modern settlement patterns in central Slovakia.
