University of Tartu Botanical Garden
A historic botanical garden established for the Imperial University of Dorpat, now maintained by the University of Tartu. Its living collections reflect more than two centuries of scientific study and horticultural practice in the Baltics.

History
Founded in 1803 as part of the Imperial University of Dorpat, the garden began on Vanemuise street near the present-day Vanemuine Small Theatre House. The original site proved inadequate for the expanding collection.
In 1806, the garden was relocated to a more suitable location on a former bastion at Lai street on the northern side of the old town—a position it occupies to this day. This move allowed for improved cultivation conditions and greater development of the collections.

The garden is organized on a former defensive fortification, integrating historical military topography with botanical purpose. Its layout reflects nineteenth-century garden design principles adapted to the Tartu setting.
