The theatre gained international prominence during the Soviet period under the direction of Juozas Miltinis, a legendary figure who shaped its artistic vision for decades. Among the performers who worked under Miltinis was Donatas Banionis, best known for his lead role in Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1972 film Solaris. The theatre was renamed in Miltinis’ honour in 1995. Since autumn 2017, a new generation of young theatre creators has assumed leadership, emphasising artistic experimentation and the development of emerging directors.
