Kaunas Pantomime Theatre

Europe’s only professional ensemble theatre dedicated exclusively to pantomime, this Kaunas institution has performed across continents since its founding in 1968.

At a glance

Kaunas Pantomime Theatre stands as Lithuania’s sole professional ensemble devoted entirely to the art of silent performance. The theatre has maintained an international touring presence, bringing wordless narrative to audiences across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

History

The theatre was established in 1968. Under artistic director Kestutis Adomaitis (1948–1996), it became the cultural institution known today. In 2003, Kaunas Municipality formally assumed the role of founder and primary supporter, securing its future as a municipal cultural resource.

Cultural significance

This ensemble represents a unique commitment to pantomime as a primary artistic discipline in Eastern Europe. Through decades of performance abroad—in Germany, Russia, Romania, Latvia, Syria, Jordan, China, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, and Denmark—the theatre has served as an ambassador for Lithuanian experimental theatre and nonverbal performance.
