M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum

History
Founded in 1921, the museum opened a temporary gallery four years later. Renamed Vytautas the Great Museum of Culture in 1936, it received its current name in 1944. A significant expansion followed in 1969. The interwar portion of the building—constructed in Art Deco and early functionalism styles—reflects the architectural confidence of Lithuania’s independent period between the world wars.

The interwar section showcases Art Deco and early functionalist design principles popular across Northern Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. The museum shares its building with the Vytautas the Great War Museum, creating a dual cultural institution. Just beyond the museum stands the Žaliakalnis Funicular Railway, Europe’s oldest still-operating funicular, which climbs 142 metres to the Church of the Resurrection.
Cultural significance
Čiurlionis himself bridged art and music, creating works that expressed symbolist and modernist sensibilities. The museum preserves and promotes his artistic legacy while serving as a broader venue for Lithuanian and international contemporary practice. Its 2015 designation with the European Heritage Label recognises its contribution to European cultural memory.
