Krustpils Castle
One of Latvia’s finest surviving medieval fortifications, Krustpils Castle bears witness to centuries of Baltic history, from its fortress origins through periods of wartime service to multiple nations.
At a glance
Krustpils Castle stands as one of the best preserved medieval castles in Latvia, located in Jēkabpils in the Latgale region. Known in German as Kreutzburg and Polish as Krzyżbork, the fortress has served military, administrative and residential functions across its long history.
History
The castle’s strategic importance shifted markedly through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, the fortress held Turkish prisoners of war, many of whom chose to remain in the region permanently after the conflict ended. The Latgale artillery regiment was subsequently stationed here, establishing a significant military presence.
The Second World War brought new occupants: a German army infirmary operated within its walls during the Nazi occupation. Following the Soviet advance in August 1944, a Red Army military hospital was established at the site, reflecting the castle’s continued strategic value as wartime infrastructure.
What you see
The castle represents medieval defensive architecture adapted and maintained across multiple centuries of use. Its preservation distinguishes it among Latvia’s castle heritage.
Cultural significance
Krustpils Castle documents Latvia’s complex geopolitical history, from medieval settlement patterns through imperial Russian rule to twentieth-century conflict. Its international architectural nomenclature—German, Polish and Latvian names—reflects the region’s multicultural past. The castle’s service as a military installation across different regimes demonstrates how fortified structures remain functionally important even as political contexts shift dramatically.
