Serhiy Pavlovych Korolyov Museum of Cosmonautics
A technology museum dedicated to the Soviet space pioneer who launched Sputnik and led the Soviet rocket program until 1966, housed in his native city.

History
Serhiy Korolyov was born in Zhytomyr when the city was part of the Russian Empire. He rose to become chief engineer of the Soviet Union’s rocket and space program from the late 1950s until his death in 1966, leading the Sputnik project that inaugurated the space age.
The house where he was born became a memorial in 1970, initially operating as a campus of the Zhytomyr Regional Museum. It achieved independent institutional status in 1987. A new, dedicated museum building was constructed in 1991 to accommodate the growing collection.
What you see
The museum displays original and replica spacecraft alongside rocket hardware. Notable pieces include the Soyuz 27 descent module, the Vostok 1 descent module, and full-size replicas of a complete Soyuz spacecraft. A sample of lunar soil and the Lunokhod 2 lunar rover represent achievements in lunar exploration.
Exterior displays feature rockets, including a geodetic version of the R-5 missile, illustrating the progression from Soviet rocket development through the space program era.
Cultural significance
The museum honours one of history’s most influential space engineers and celebrates Ukraine’s role in the Soviet space program. Korolyov’s legacy shaped the trajectory of human spaceflight; his work directly enabled the first satellite and the first human spaceflight.
