History
The museum was established in 1961, initially occupying a modest house on Ion Creangă Street. Its first exhibition, held in the State Theater, centered on the Cuban Revolution—a departure from its eventual mission. Until 1966, limited gallery space confined it to archival functions.
In 1966, the museum relocated to its current building at Nicolae Bălcescu Street, a 1920 structure that had served as the first headquarters and staff housing for the S.A.R. Petroșani mining firm. Designated a historic monument by Romania’s Culture Ministry, the building underwent extensive renovations between 1996 and 1998. A numismatics exhibition opened in 1970.

Original structural modifications include the conversion of doorways into vaulted ceilings, adapting domestic spaces for exhibition use. The 1996–1998 restoration respected the building’s period character while modernizing its display infrastructure.
