Nicolae Grigorescu Memorial Museum
The former home of Romania’s celebrated painter Nicolae Grigorescu, now a museum preserving his personal collections, reconstructed studio and the story of an artist’s domestic life in early modernist Wallachia.

History
Grigorescu commissioned and designed the house between 1901 and 1904, creating a local-style residence with eight rooms across two floors, three-sided balconies and a shingled roof. He occupied it with his family until his death in 1907. The family remained until 1918, when fire destroyed the studio and left the structure in ruins.
Local authorities rebuilt the house in 1951–1952, assisted by Grigorescu’s son and his former assistant. Between 1955 and 1957, workers transformed it into a memorial museum, using photographs and slides from 1904, 1908 and 1910 to guide the interior reconstruction. Exhibits came from the artist’s descendants and private collectors.

The reconstructed studio forms the museum’s centerpiece, lined with paintings by Grigorescu. The house displays selections from his personal library, a collection of Oriental objects he gathered during his lifetime, and a substantial 18th-century French tapestry. The 1957 bronze bust of the artist completes the memorial ensemble.
Cultural significance
The museum preserves both the material world of one of Romania’s foremost painters and a document of early 20th-century domestic architecture. Grigorescu’s self-designed house reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of a major artistic figure working in provincial Wallachia during the modernist period.
