Established on 30 January 1990 as the Museum of the History of Polish Independence and Social Movements, the museum received its current name in 1991. Two years later, in 1992, it was designated a National Cultural Institution by the Polish government. Andrzej Stawarz directed the museum from its founding through 2009.
