History
The museum’s origins trace to expatriate artist JW Power, who in his 1943 will directed that a contemporary art museum be established in Sydney and bequeathed both funds and works from his collection to the University of Sydney. These holdings, known as the Power Gallery of Contemporary Art, were exhibited as a travelling collection across two university buildings for decades.
The institution formally opened in 1991 when the former Maritime Services Board building became available at Circular Quay. Early growth strained its resources until director Elizabeth Ann Macgregor’s tenure in the early 21st century, when admission fees were eliminated and funding sources diversified. A major expansion and redevelopment from 2010 to 2012 introduced a modern wing, and the museum was renamed Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.
