History
Established in 1984 as part of Victoria’s sesquicentenary celebrations, the museum was created alongside the Children’s Museum and the Museum of Chinese Australian History. The site itself—Pipemakers Park Complex—originated as a manufacturing facility. Its three historic bluestone buildings and associated structures were recognized for their significance and added to the Victorian Heritage Register on 20 August 1982, prior to the museum’s opening. In 2025, the museum temporarily relocated to Maribyrnong Library during refurbishment works at the Pipemakers Park site.
