History
Construction of the powerhouse was driven by immediate industrial needs: electricity for general lighting across the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area and power for the Leeton Butter Factory. The site was strategically chosen for its proximity to the Yanco railway line—essential for coal delivery—and access to water for the cooling systems required by its secondhand 75 KW generator.
In 1937, the five-story concrete structure was extended to meet growing demand. The station continued to serve the region until 1957, when the completion of the Snowy Mountains Scheme introduced abundant hydroelectric power from larger facilities, making the original Yanco station redundant.

The building is constructed entirely of concrete, a defining feature of its industrial design. A striking engineering achievement of the era was the installation of 6.5 kilometres of transmission lines on flexible steel poles—the first of their kind in Australia, representing an innovation in electrical distribution technology.
