History
The State Library traces its origins to the Australian Subscription Library, founded in the New South Wales colony in 1826. The institution was formally established as the State Library in 1869, absorbing and building upon earlier collections. The Mitchell Wing was constructed between 1905 and 1910 under the design of Walter Liberty Vernon, assisted by H. C. L. Anderson. Subsequent expansions followed: Howie Bros added extensions in 1939, FWC Powell & Sons in 1959, and Melocco Bros in 1964. The Macquarie Street Wing, begun in 1983, opened in 1988. The property was registered on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.
What you see
The Mitchell Wing reflects Edwardian institutional architecture, designed by Vernon and Anderson in the early twentieth century. The building commands a prominent corner location at Macquarie Street and Shakespeare Place. Later twentieth-century additions—by successive architectural firms—expanded the library’s capacity while preserving its character as a substantial civic landmark.
