Jinling Library
A municipal library twice destroyed and rebuilt, Jinling stands as a record of Nanjing’s tumultuous twentieth century and its resilience as a cultural centre.
At a glance
Jinling Library, Nanjing’s principal public library, holds two million volumes across a modern campus in Jianye District. Its current building opened to the public in 1980 and was substantially expanded with a new pavilion completed in 2009.
History
Founded in 1927 as the Nanjing Special Popular Library, the institution underwent several name changes in its early years—becoming the No.1 Municipal Library in 1928 and the Special Municipal Demotic Library by 1930. The library merged with the Domestic Science Museum in 1932 and was renamed the Nanjing Municipal Library the following year.
On December 13, 1937, Japanese troops occupied Nanjing. The Pan Palace, then housing the library, sustained severe damage and most of its collection was destroyed. After the war, the institution remained closed for many years. In 1952, Nanjing’s status changed from national capital to provincial capital of Jiangsu. Six years later, the Municipal Government commissioned a rebuild. The new library opened in October 1980 at 262 Changjiang Road. Since 2005, a major expansion added a new pavilion, which opened for public use in 2009.
What you see

Cultural significance
Jinling Library embodies the arc of modern Chinese history—from the nation’s republican era through invasion and reconstruction. Its survival and growth reflect Nanjing’s determination to maintain cultural institutions despite twentieth-century upheaval. Today it serves as the city’s primary repository of knowledge and a symbol of intellectual continuity.
