Mandarin’s House
The residence of reformist thinker Zheng Guanying, this sprawling family compound in São Lourenço preserves the domestic world of late imperial China’s great modernizers.
At a glance
A 4,000-square-metre residential complex and one of Macau’s largest surviving family houses, built around the life and work of the Qing theoretician Zheng Guanying (1842–1921). Within these walls, he completed his landmark political treatise during a period of dynastic reform and foreign pressure on China.
History
Zheng Guanying, a late Qing theoretician and reformist, made this house his family home and workspace. Here, surrounded by the architecture of private life, he produced Shengshi Weiyan (Words of Warning in Times of Prosperity)—his masterpiece addressing the crises and opportunities facing nineteenth-century China. The house stands as a material record of intellectual work conducted within a merchant-official household.
