Sacred Heart Cathedral
The seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Yokohama, this Neo-Gothic cathedral rose from the ashes of the 1923 earthquake to become a landmark of Japan’s Catholic revival.

History
In 1862, shortly after Japan lifted its long-standing ban on Christianity, the Paris Foreign Missions Society built a Catholic church in the Yokohama foreign settlement. This original brick structure with twin bell towers stood for decades before the catastrophic 1923 Great Kantō earthquake reduced it to rubble.
Czech architect Jan Josef Švagr designed the rebuilt cathedral in the Neo-Gothic style, completed in 1933. Four years later, when the Diocese of Yokohama was formally established in 1937, Yamate Catholic Church elevated to cathedral status, making it the spiritual center of the diocese.
