History

The building proved resilient through World War II’s final years, surviving both the intensive 1944 bombing of Königsberg and the 1945 Battle of Königsberg that devastated much of the city. When East Prussia fell to Soviet forces in 1945, Königsberg was incorporated into the Soviet Union and renamed Kaliningrad. The church was subsequently converted to residential housing, a fate shared by many religious buildings in the newly Soviet territory.
