The Rossiya Theatre is a heritage-listed building in central Moscow, designed by architect Yuri Sheverdyaev and completed in 1961. Today it is the largest theatre in the city, operated by Stage Entertainment. It began life as a single-screen cinema and only became a stage venue decades later.
History
Built in 1961 as the Rossiya Cinema, the building served Moscow audiences through the late Soviet period. In 1997 the film distributor Karo Film leased it, later buying the property outright. Karo renamed it the Pushkinsky and carried out a renovation, keeping it running as a cinema into the 2010s. In 2012, Stage Entertainment Russia signed a five-year lease. The building’s function shifted again, from screen to stage. Its footprint on Pushkinskaya Square, however, never moved.
What you see
Sheverdyaev’s design gives the theatre a scale built for mass audiences. It reads as a solid, mid-century civic block rather than an ornamental facade exercise. Inside, the auditorium retains the generous proportions of a Soviet-era cinema hall, since adapted for musical staging and orchestration. The building’s presence on the square is architectural shorthand for postwar Moscow cinema culture, even as its interior has been reworked for live performance.
Cultural significance
Few Moscow venues have crossed so cleanly from cinema to musical theatre. The Rossiya’s conversion mirrors a wider shift in the city’s entertainment landscape after 1997, as international commercial theatre operators moved into buildings once built for state-run film distribution. Under Stage Entertainment, the hall has hosted Russian premieres of Western musicals, including The Little Mermaid, Chicago, Beauty and the Beast, Singin’ in the Rain and Cinderella. The building is protected as a monument of architecture, a rare status for a structure whose primary use has changed twice.
