Old Pinecrest Hotel

A historic waterfront property transformed across decades from country club to spiritual education center, now commemorated by its National Register listing.

At a glance

The Old Pinecrest Hotel occupied a lakeside site in central Florida, serving multiple institutional purposes throughout the twentieth century before being demolished.

History

The building operated first as a country club, then housed The Highlands School, a girls boarding school. In 1994, the Transcendental Meditation movement purchased the property to establish an educational institution focused on Vedic science. The hotel was listed in the 1989 publication A Guide to Florida’s Historic Architecture (University of Florida Press) as the “Pinecrest Hotel—Florida Capital of the Age of Enlightenment.” On March 24, 2000, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. By March 2, 2007, the structure had been demolished, leaving only scattered palm trees at the site.

What you see

The building no longer stands. Visitors to the location will find only vegetation remaining.

Cultural significance

The hotel’s shifting uses reflect broader changes in American leisure, education, and spiritual practice across the twentieth century. Its National Register designation preserves its historical record even as the physical structure has vanished.
