History
The site began as a cycle-racing track in 1924. In 1935, facing the prospect of hosting 1938 FIFA World Cup matches, the venue was entirely reconfigured. Architects Jacques d’Welles and Raoul Jourde rebuilt it in Art Déco style, and it opened on 12 June 1938.
Originally named Stade du Parc Lescure—after the fallow lands it occupied, themselves named from a former chapel—the stadium was renamed in 2001 to honour Jacques Chaban-Delmas, the Resistance fighter and longtime mayor of Bordeaux (1947–1995).
Successive expansions, particularly for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, increased capacity. The 2007 Rugby World Cup prompted installation of two giant television screens measuring 37 m².

The stadium’s defining innovation was its fully covered stands without interior pillars—the first of its kind globally—allowing unobstructed views of play. This Art Déco achievement required sophisticated structural engineering.
Later additions created a patchwork of styles. The roof covers sections built before 1984; newer seating on the old cycle-track footprint remains exposed, complicating restoration efforts. The player tunnel stretching nearly 120 metres ranks as Europe’s longest.
Cultural significance
Stade Chaban-Delmas represents a pivotal moment in twentieth-century stadium design. Its 1938 innovation—eliminating obstructing pillars—influenced countless sports buildings worldwide and remains a landmark achievement in sports architecture.
The stadium’s naming after Chaban-Delmas reflects Bordeaux’s civic pride in a figure central to the city’s postwar identity and reconstruction.
