John Gorton Building

A masterwork of Inter-war Stripped Classical design, this government office anchors Canberra’s Parliamentary Triangle with symmetry, verticality, and restrained elegance.

At a glance

The John Gorton Building serves as the administrative headquarters of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. Completed in 1956, it exemplifies the Stripped Classical style that defines Canberra’s mid-century institutional architecture. The structure occupies a prominent position within the Parliamentary Triangle, flanking the central land axis in accordance with Walter Burley Griffin’s 1916 masterplan.

History

Planning began in 1924, with formal design completed in 1946. Construction finished in 1956, positioning the building as a significant expression of post-war Canberra’s architectural ambitions. The structure was listed on the Commonwealth Heritage List on 22 June 2004. Originally called the Administrative Building, it was later renamed in honour of former Prime Minister John Gorton.

What you see

The building displays hallmark features of Inter-war Stripped Classical style: symmetrical facades divided into vertical bays, restrained classical details, simplified column forms, and an expressed portico. Subdued spandrels between storeys emphasise verticality throughout. The exterior retains exceptional integrity, as do the foyers, lift lobbies, and central corridors—spaces that showcase the style’s commitment to dignified simplicity and functional clarity.

Cultural significance

The John Gorton Building forms an essential element of the Parliamentary Triangle’s planned cultural landscape. Its strategic placement balances the later Treasury Building across the central lawns, anchoring the monumental geometry of Griffin’s land axis. Together, these structures express Canberra’s vision of ordered, rational governance expressed through architectural form.
