History
Originally called Eweburn, the town received one of the “farmyard” names assigned by Otago Chief Surveyor John Turnbull Thomson to streams and locations throughout the district. The settlement took its present name from the Fifth Earl of Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand from 1897 to 1904. The extension of the Otago Central Railway to the area during his tenure catalysed growth and development.
