Bagnara di Romagna is a compact walled village in the southern Po plain, and its Rocca Sforzesca dominates the settlement from a slight rise. History
The fortress at Bagnara di Romagna was most likely founded by the Manfredi signoria of Faenza during the 14th century as part of their network of fortified outposts across the Romagna lowlands. Control passed to the Sforza in the 15th century, giving the castle the name it retains today. After the definitive papal annexation of the Romagna, the Rocca lost its military function and fell into gradual decay before restoration campaigns in the 20th and 21st centuries returned it to public use. Archaeological investigations conducted during restoration revealed stratified occupation layers spanning the medieval and post-medieval periods.

Getting there
Bagnara di Romagna lies approximately 30 kilometres south of Ravenna and 40 kilometres east of Bologna. By car, exit the A14 motorway at Faenza and follow provincial roads south-west toward Bagnara. There is no direct train service to the village; the nearest railway stations are Castel Bolognese (10 km) and Faenza (12 km), both on the Bologna–Rimini main line, with onward connections by local bus or taxi. Parking is available near the castle walls.
