Hecht Company Warehouse
A boldly modernist warehouse in Ivy City, defined by its extensive use of glass block and a glowing twelve-pointed star cupola that crowns its corner.
At a glance
The Hecht Company Warehouse exemplifies Streamline Moderne design, the forward-looking industrial style of the 1930s. Engineered by Gilbert V. Steel of the New York firm Abbott and Merkt, the building stands as a landmark of commercial modernism on New York Avenue, its geometric forms and luminous materials announcing both function and ambition.
History
Constructed in 1937 and expanded in 1948, the warehouse served as The Hecht Company’s central distribution hub for decades. At its opening, the facility included an in-house vehicle repair shop, air conditioning for the basement and first two floors, and three railroad track platforms—each feature testifying to the building’s role as a fully integrated logistics center. A comprehensive rehabilitation in 1992 employed matching materials to preserve its character. Today the site is undergoing redevelopment as the Hecht Warehouse District, a mixed-use retail and residential complex.
What you see
Glass block dominates the facade, a material choice that announces modernity while serving practical needs. The signature feature is a twelve-pointed star-shaped cupola at the corner, illuminated after dark. Black brick and glass block together spell out “The Hecht Co” at the fifth floor—a bold typographic statement characteristic of Streamline Moderne’s marriage of commerce and craft.
Cultural significance
The warehouse represents a pivotal moment in American industrial design, when modernist principles transformed ordinary commercial buildings into expressions of progress and optimism. Its prominent placement on New York Avenue made it a visible manifesto of twentieth-century efficiency and style.
