History
Constructed in 1901, Milton House served as a private surgical hospital—a fitting use for its location near the concentration of medical professionals on Collins Street. Its street, once largely warehouse space, gradually transformed into professional quarters.
After decades as a rooming house, it returned to medical use in 1950 as an X-ray facility operated by the Victorian Health Commission during the postwar tuberculosis campaign. Subsequently it housed government and private offices, adapting to Melbourne’s changing commercial life while retaining its original fabric.
What you see
The building presents a broadly Georgian composition enlivened by Art Nouveau detail. Most striking are the ornamental terracotta band, the sinuous entrance arch, and wrought-iron work framing the door—elements attributed to architect Robert Joseph Haddon (1866–1929).
Sydney Smith & Ogg are credited as architects, though Haddon is thought responsible for the decorative vocabulary that distinguishes the façade.
