History
The department store served Görlitz’s shopping public throughout the 20th century, evolving with retail trends and consumer needs. After its closure in 2009, the building faced an uncertain future as commercial viability declined. In 2012, only a beauty shop occupied the storefronts. Local authorities and a citizens’ action group worked to preserve and revitalize the landmark. By 2013, a private investor had committed to reopening the store as a universal department store, modeled on the Department Store of Upper Lusatia (KaDeO), itself inspired by Berlin’s legendary Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe).
