Owyhee County Courthouse

History
Tourtellotte & Hummel, an Idaho-based practice active throughout the twentieth century, designed the building in 1936 and saw it completed that same year. The courthouse served the sparsely populated Owyhee County from its construction onward. Recognition of its architectural merit came later: the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The entry composition dominates the façade. Fluted pilasters frame a square arch, their vertical lines punctuated by a sunburst panel of foliated ornament. Above stretches an entablature combining floral, triangular, and wavelet motifs—a compressed encyclopedia of Art Deco vocabulary. The building reads as understated until you approach, when its decorative intensity becomes apparent.
Cultural significance
The courthouse represents the ambitions of county governments during the Depression era to project civic pride and modernity.
