The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa

Frank Augustus Miller’s magnum opus, this sprawling downtown hotel synthesizes Mission Revival style with European castle architecture—a personal collection of global antiques and architectural ambition.

At a glance

The Mission Inn stands as the largest Mission Revival Style building in the United States. Though architecturally eclectic, it represents a singular vision developed over more than five decades. Today it operates as a luxury hotel and spa, certified as a member of Historic Hotels of America.

History

Frank Augustus Miller acquired the original property in 1880 and spent the next fifty-five years shaping it into an architectural fantasy. He drew inspiration from California’s historic missions alongside European castle design, creating a hybrid vocabulary unique to American architecture. Miller’s world travels yielded an extensive collection of antiques and art, which he incorporated throughout the building.

The hotel remained under Miller family stewardship until 2026, when Kelly Roberts sold it to the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation for $33.2 million.

What you see

The Mission Inn blends Mission Revival elements—arches, bell towers, courtyards—with European castle details. This composite approach, unconventional by strict architectural standards, creates visual richness across the facade and interior spaces. The property spans multiple interconnected buildings developed incrementally across Miller’s lifetime.

Cultural significance

The hotel exemplifies early 20th-century American eclecticism and the Mission Revival movement that swept California. Its scale and ambition mark it as a landmark of American hospitality architecture. Designation as a Historic Hotel of America recognizes its preservation and continued cultural value.
