New Student House

The home of the University of Helsinki’s Student Union, this early 20th-century building anchors a vibrant community of student nations and organisations in the heart of the city.

At a glance

Located at Mannerheimintie 5, the New Student House stands adjacent to its older counterpart and forms part of the Kaivopiha complex. It serves as the operational centre for the Student Union and houses offices, nation premises, and student spaces—though portions have been adapted for commercial tenancy.

History

Completed in 1910, the building was designed by architects Armas Lindgren and Wivi Lönn. Originally called Osakuntatalo (House of the Nations), it became a focal point for the university’s student nations from its inception. Between 1924 and 1968, it contained the Hotel Hansa, a commercial operation that occupied significant floor space. In 2008, a third student house opened in the Leppäsuo district, expanding the Student Union’s facilities. The New Student House is currently undergoing renovation as part of a larger project to create the Grand Hansa Hotel, scheduled to open in 2022 and managed by The Unbound Collection division of Hyatt.

What you see

The building reflects early 20th-century Helsinki design principles established by Lindgren and Lönn. The A side and part of the B side remain dedicated to student activities, preserving the original character of these spaces while the remainder accommodates modern office and commercial use.

Cultural significance

The New Student House embodies the institutional life of Finland’s oldest university. Five of the university’s fifteen nations continue active operations here: the Finnish-speaking Eteläsuomalainen, Savolainen, and Varsinaissuomalainen, alongside the Swedish-speaking Åbo Nation and Östra Finlands Nation. These student organisations maintain traditions and community functions central to university culture.
