Rivalta Castle is a remarkably well-preserved medieval fortress in the village of Rivalta Trebbia, in the municipality of Gazzola in the province of Piacenza, Emilia-Romagna. History
The earliest documentation of a fortification at Rivalta dates to 1048, when it was held by the Bishop of Piacenza. Control passed through several noble families during the communal and signorial periods before being acquired by the Fulignano family in the 14th century and subsequently by the Zanardi Landi, who have held it continuously since 1390. This extraordinary continuity of ownership is almost without parallel in Italian castle history and is the primary reason for the exceptional state of preservation of both the structure and its contents. The Zanardi Landi accumulated noble titles — counts, later princes — and expanded and embellished the castle over successive generations while maintaining its fundamental medieval character.

Getting there
Rivalta Trebbia is located approximately 15 km southwest of Piacenza. By car, take the Via Emilia (SS9) west from Piacenza and follow signs south towards Gazzola and Rivalta along the SP56; the castle is well-signposted. There is no direct rail connection; the nearest station is Piacenza, from which the castle is most conveniently reached by car or taxi. Organised day trips from Piacenza and Parma are available through local tour operators. Parking is available in the village.
