Cathedral of St Bavo

A Neo-Gothic cathedral built to serve Haarlem’s Catholic community after centuries of Protestant possession, housing a treasury of religious artifacts.

At a glance

Designed by architect Joseph Cuypers and completed in 1930, the Cathedral of St Bavo stands as the principal cathedral for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam. It replaced a waterstaatskerk that had occupied the Jansstraat since the 16th century, when the original Sint-Bavokerk was lost to the Reformation.

History

The original Sint-Bavokerk served Haarlem’s Catholic faithful until 1578, when it was converted to Protestant use. For more than three centuries, Haarlem’s Catholics worshipped in a modest waterstaatskerk called St. Joseph on the Jansstraat. In 1895, construction began on a grand replacement designed by Cuypers, one of the Netherlands’ foremost ecclesiastical architects. The cathedral was completed in 1930.

What you see

Cuypers designed the cathedral in the Neo-Gothic style, befitting its purpose as a major religious center. The building reflects late 19th-century Catholic ambitions to reclaim architectural prominence in a historically Protestant city.

Cultural significance

The Cathedral marks the return of Catholic institutional presence to Haarlem after centuries of marginalization. Within its walls, the former sacristy has been transformed into a schatkamer (treasury) displaying historical artifacts from Haarlem’s Catholic heritage, preserving material memory of faith practices interrupted by the Reformation.
