Georgia O’Keeffe Home and Studio

The principal residence and studio of modernist painter Georgia O’Keeffe from 1943 until her death in 1986, now a museum dedicated to her artistic legacy.

At a glance

This adobe compound in the high desert of northern New Mexico served as Georgia O’Keeffe’s creative base for over four decades. The house and studio remain intimate spaces where visitors encounter the artist’s working environment and the landscape that shaped her iconic abstractions and southwestern imagery.

History

O’Keeffe purchased the property in 1940 and moved there permanently in 1943, making it her home until her death in 1986 at age ninety-eight. The compound became inseparable from her artistic practice and vision. In 1998, the Home and Studio earned recognition as a National Historic Landmark, acknowledged as one of the most important artistic sites in the southwestern United States.

What you see

The studio preserves O’Keeffe’s working spaces much as she left them, allowing visitors rare access to where she developed her revolutionary modernist paintings. The adobe structure reflects both vernacular New Mexico architecture and the artist’s personal aesthetic choices, creating an environment shaped by both landscape and individual vision.

Cultural significance

O’Keeffe’s work fundamentally transformed American modernism through her bold abstractions and her intense focus on the New Mexico landscape. The Home and Studio documents her creative process and her profound connection to the region’s geography, light, and forms—elements central to understanding twentieth-century American art.
