History
The museum’s roots trace to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, founded in 1739. Collections were first opened to the public in 1786, then formally established as a museum in 1819. The institution separated from the Academy in 1965.
Anders Sparrman, a student of Carl Linnaeus and voyager with Captain James Cook, served as an early keeper. Zoologist Sven Nilsson transformed the museum’s disorganized collections during his tenure (1828–1831) before returning to Lund as professor.

Architect Axel Anderberg designed the present structure, completed in 1916. The building is crowned with a distinctive dome and represents Sweden’s largest museum building as of 2014. Its Neoclassical form anchors the cultural landscape of Frescati.
In 1993, the museum opened Cosmonova, Sweden’s first purpose-built IMAX Dome cinema and the nation’s largest planetarium, housed in a dedicated annex.
Cultural significance
The museum preserves four centuries of Swedish and international natural history collections, from Linnaeus’s era onward. Its scientific standards—reflected in the Index Herbariorum code S, used internationally for specimen citation—establish it as a major research institution. Cosmonova’s arrival in 1993 pioneered immersive science communication in Scandinavia.
