History
The first church on this site opened in 1892 to serve Gloucester’s burgeoning Portuguese immigrant population, who arrived to work in the region’s thriving fishery. That wooden structure burned in 1914, destroying the building but not the community’s faith. The Spanish Revival replacement was designed to echo the Santa Maria Madalena church in Madalena, on the Azorean island of Pico—a symbolic link to the ancestral homes of parishioners. The church was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
