Overview
Villa Priula sits in the rolling Brianza countryside between the southern tip of Lake Como and the industrial city of Lecco. The property is part of the rich tradition of Lombard patrician villas built as summer retreats by Milanese noble families during the 16th and 17th centuries — a typology that defines the cultural landscape of the Lake Como and Brianza area. Today it operates as a hotel and events venue, maintaining the villa’s historic character.
History
The villa takes its name from the Priuli (Priula) family, a distinguished Venetian and Lombard patrician dynasty with documented presence in the Como area from the Renaissance period. Like many Brianza villas, it served as a seasonal residence for a noble Milanese family, passing through several owners over the centuries before its conversion to hospitality use. The rural Brianza landscape it occupies — known as the “Balcone della Lombardia” — became famous in the 19th century as a retreat for Milanese intellectuals and artists.
What you see
The main villa building features the characteristic Lombard country-house design: rendered facade, symmetrical window arrangement, and a central entrance loggia. The surrounding park retains mature trees and garden terraces. Guest rooms are housed in the main villa and in ancillary buildings; common spaces preserve original architectural detailing including vaulted ceilings and period furnishings. The elevated position offers views toward the pre-Alpine foothills and on clear days toward Lake Como.
Cultural significance
Villa Priula is representative of the Brianza villa tradition that shaped northern Lombard culture from the Renaissance onward. The broader Brianza area preserves hundreds of such villas — many now private, some converted to hotels or cultural centres — forming an open-air museum of aristocratic rural architecture between Milan and the lakes.
Practical information
Villa Priula operates as a hotel and conference venue. For current room availability, rates, and restaurant hours, check the official website or contact the property directly. Advance booking is recommended during peak Lake Como season (April–October).
