Archaeological Park and Museum of Scolacium

Scolacium — ancient Scylletium, later renamed Minervium and Colonia Minervia — was a seaside city in present-day Calabria, whose ruins lie at the frazione of Roccelletta in the comune of Borgia, near Catanzaro, overlooking the Gulf of Squillace. The Archaeological Park of Scolacium preserves the remains of a Roman amphitheatre, forum, thermal baths, and a basilica church, set within an olive grove that amplifies the site’s atmospheric quality. The park and its affiliated museum make Scolacium one of the most comprehensively presented ancient sites in Calabria.

Overview

Scolacium is notable for its long chronological range, from early Greek presence to Roman colony to late-antique Christian community, all legible within a single compact site. The city’s most celebrated ancient connection is the Ostrogothic statesman Cassiodorus, who was born near here and, after his retirement from Roman imperial service, founded the monastery of Vivarium in the surrounding area — a centre of manuscript preservation of lasting importance to Western learning. The park’s setting within a working olive grove of ancient trees reinforces the continuity between past and present landscape.

History

Greek settlers established a presence at Scylletium by at least the fifth century BC, exploiting the natural harbour of the Gulf of Squillace. Rome refounded the site as a Latin colony — Colonia Minervia Scolacium — in the first century BC, giving it the regular urban grid, forum, and public buildings visible today. The city continued to function into late antiquity; the construction of an early Christian basilica within the forum area attests to the community’s persistence well into the sixth century AD. Cassiodorus (c. 485–585), the Roman senator, scholar, and monastic founder, is the most historically prominent figure associated with the locality.

What you see

The archaeological park encompasses the Roman amphitheatre — one of the best-preserved in Calabria — whose cavea was partly cut into natural hillside, a common Roman economy of construction. Nearby are the remains of the forum colonnade, thermal bath complexes, and the foundations of the early Christian basilica with traces of polychrome marble revetment. The site museum houses sculptures, inscriptions, mosaics, and everyday objects spanning the Greek through Byzantine periods, providing interpretive context for the open-air remains.

Cultural significance

Scolacium’s association with Cassiodorus lends it exceptional importance in the history of late-antique scholarship: the Vivarium monastery he founded nearby is credited with preserving Greek and Latin texts that might otherwise have been lost during the early medieval period. The site thus anchors a landscape of cultural memory linking Roman Calabria with the transmission of classical learning to medieval Europe.
