Overview

Colle di Val d’Elsa is a town and comune in the province of Siena, Tuscany, with a population of approximately 21,600. It is divided into a lower modern town (Colle Bassa) and an upper medieval quarter (Colle Alta) perched dramatically on a ridge. Hotel Alcide serves visitors drawn to the rich artistic and architectural heritage of this part of Tuscany, including the nearby towns of San Gimignano (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Volterra, Monteriggioni, and the city of Siena itself.

History

Colle di Val d’Elsa achieved its greatest historical prominence in the medieval and Renaissance periods: the town was the birthplace of Arnolfo di Cambio (c. 1240), the architect and sculptor responsible for the original Florence Cathedral and Palazzo Vecchio. The Battle of Colle (1269) was a decisive engagement of the Guelph-Ghibelline conflict that shaped the political landscape of Tuscany for generations. By the sixteenth century the town had become an important centre of glassmaking and crystal production — a craft industry that continues today and for which Colle di Val d’Elsa is internationally recognised.

What you see

From a base at Hotel Alcide, visitors can walk the Via del Castello in the upper medieval quarter, passing towers, Romanesque churches, and Renaissance palazzi. The Museo Civico e Diocesano d’Arte Sacra houses medieval and Renaissance works including sculptures attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio. The surrounding Val d’Elsa countryside, with its cypress-lined roads, vineyards, and olive groves, exemplifies the Tuscan landscape that has been painted and photographed for centuries.

Cultural significance

Colle di Val d’Elsa’s role as birthplace of Arnolfo di Cambio gives it particular resonance in the history of Italian Gothic architecture: the town produced one of the master builders of the age that shaped Florence’s skyline. Its crystal and glassmaking tradition, recognised by the EU as a Geographical Indication product, links the artisanal economy of the Val d’Elsa to a lineage stretching back to the medieval period.
