Synagogue of Pesaro
The Synagogue of Pesaro is a Baroque-era Jewish house of worship built in 1642, ten years after the establishment of the Jewish ghetto in Pesaro. Its interior is considered one of the finest and most refined examples of architecture for Jewish worship in Italy, featuring a vaulted ceiling decorated with white and blue stucco rosettes, 17th-century furnishings, and a Torah ark and bema positioned on opposite walls following Spanish rite tradition. Managed since 1999 by the Jewish community of Ancona under a loan agreement with the Pesaro municipality, the building underwent major restoration from 2003.

Overview
The Synagogue of Pesaro stands as a rare and well-preserved example of 17th-century Jewish religious architecture in central Italy. The building follows the Spanish rite layout, with the Torah ark and bema positioned on the two narrower walls of the rectangular prayer hall, reflecting the liturgical traditions brought by Sephardic Jews to the Italian peninsula. Though no longer active as a congregation, the synagogue is open to visitors and continues to play a role in local cultural life and Jewish heritage tourism in the Marche region.
History
The Jewish community of Pesaro dates to at least the 15th century, but the ghetto was formally established by ducal decree in 1632. The synagogue was constructed a decade later, in 1642, to serve the concentrated Jewish population. For centuries it remained the spiritual centre of Pesaro’s Jewish life. As the community declined in the 19th and 20th centuries, the building eventually fell into disuse as a functioning congregation. In 1999, the Pesaro municipal government placed the building under a loan agreement with the Jewish Community of Ancona, which undertook comprehensive restoration from 2003, addressing decorations, paintings, furnishings, and interior elements.
What you see
The main hall is a large rectangular space with a high vaulted ceiling decorated with white and blue stucco rosettes interspersed with floral designs — an interior described by scholars as one of the most beautiful examples of Italian synagogue architecture. The Torah ark and bema occupy the two shorter walls, and high wooden cladding lines the walls below rows of pews that run along all four sides. The building has two entrances: a larger stone doorway rebuilt in the 19th century for the main congregation and a smaller entrance that historically served the women’s section. Original 17th-century furnishings and decorative elements have been substantially maintained through successive restorations.
Cultural significance
The Synagogue of Pesaro represents the continuity of Jewish cultural life in the Marche region across four centuries and provides a tangible link to the vibrant, if often precarious, existence of Italian Jewish communities under the ghetto system. As one of the best-preserved Baroque-period synagogues in central Italy, it stands as an important monument to Sephardic liturgical traditions and the artistic patronage of Italian Jewish communities in the 17th century.
