History
Founded in 1075, Chichester Cathedral was established when the episcopal seat moved from Selsey. The city of Chichester itself, though small, grew around the cathedral’s presence. Eighteenth-century writer Daniel Defoe observed that the city’s entire population could fit inside the cathedral at once, and that without a few families, there would be little society beyond the cathedral’s canons and dignitaries.
