History
Gare Montparnasse opened in 1840 as Gare de l’Ouest and was rebuilt in 1852. In 1895, the station gained international notoriety following the Montparnasse derailment, when a steam locomotive crashed through the station building—an accident immortalized in photographs that became widely reproduced and referenced in popular culture.
The station was relocated south to its current site in 1969. This move enabled the development of Tour Montparnasse on the original location, making the railway terminus integral to the area’s mid-twentieth-century urban renewal.
